Summer in Maine

In June of 2006, Libra Future Fund launched a new initiative, Summer in Maine, which seeks to promote internship opportunities and create a network of interns who can experience all that living in Maine has to offer. Internships provide a unique opportunity for college students to gain valuable experience, make professional connections in Maine, and introduce them to Maine as a potential place to live and work.

The Summer in Maine initiative was a tremendous success in 2007. Activities from 2007 included a dinner at the Cumberland Club with some of the most prominent business leaders in Maine, an overnight whitewater rafting trip on the Kennebec River, box seats at a Sea Dogs game, and a barbecue at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.

As anticipated, the program underwent a significant expansion to include 31 interns from 10 different organizations in the greater Portland area. Organizations affiliated with Summer in Maine 2007 were:

Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Portland
Hannaford Bros., Scarborough
Maine Medical Center Research Institute, Portland
Maine Public Broadcasting, Lewiston
Maine State Planning Office, Augusta
MaineHealth, Portland
Pineland Farms, New Gloucester
Pineland Farms Natural Meats, New Gloucester
TD Banknorth, Portland
United Way of Greater Portland, Portland

Summer in Maine 2008:

Building on the success of last year’s Summer in Maine, Libra Future Fund anticipates increasing the scope of the program to approximately 40 internships. Summer in Maine is currently working with participating employers from last year as well as recruiting other organizations to take part in this summer’s programming.

Internships:

While Summer in Maine actively promotes internships in various industries throughout Maine, selection of candidates for those positions is left to the discretion of the individual employers. Interns involved with Summer in Maine are employees-at-will of their respective organizations. While we do not actively recruit or hire interns, we may be able to refer candidates to affiliated internship opportunities. Students interested in this may contact Libra Future Fund.
